In our last article, we covered the “why” on separating business and personal finances. Now, we’re going over the “how”. As Perth accountants, we know a thing or two about dividing and managing these areas. Here are four simple ways you can keep business and personal finances separate, and make the financial administration side of your business significantly easier to manage.
1. Open a business bank account
A dedicated business account is the foundation of your professional finances, and one of the most practical things you can do for your business. From here, you can track income and expenses without having to sift through personal spending. You can pay bills and wages, deposit cash, collect invoices, buy equipment, and more (the same principal can be applied to a business debit or credit card). All this makes tax time smoother.
2. Pay yourself a salary
Giving yourself a realistic salary from your business bank account helps create a boundary between your business and personal finances. We recommend setting up a direct deposit from your business account to your personal one twice a month, so income appears as if you’re working for somebody else.
3. Track expenses & separate receipts
Don’t mix your personal receipts with your business ones. If you buy groceries for your household and printer paper for your business in the same transaction, it’s difficult to track corporate expenses, which is a headache at tax time. Thankfully, a dedicated business bank account and credit or debit card makes separating business receipts much easier.
4. Track when you use personal items for business purposes
Let your accountant know if, when, and how often you use a dedicated home office, drive your personal car to meetings, or make work calls on your personal mobile. This can even come down to when you use personal printer ink for a work document, or home WIFI for a Zoom call. Even if it seems time consuming, tracking everything will save you time later one. Accurately tracking when you use personal items as a part of your business operations will allow you to claim more at tax time.
