Last year saw significant changes in the way small business owners run their operations.
One major change was employers running their business from home. If your home became your primary place of business, there may be additional expenses you can claim a deduction for at 2020/2021 tax time.
Expenses you can claim.
In all the following, you can only claim for business-related expenses. For example, if you use your phone to make work calls and personal calls, you can only claim for the work-related ones.
Electricity expenses associated with heating, cooling, and lighting the area from which you are working and running items you are using for work.
Cleaning costs for a dedicated work area.
Phone and internet expenses.
Computer consumables (for example, printer paper and ink) and stationery.
Home office equipment, including computers, printers, phones, furniture and furnishings — you can claim either the full cost of items up to $300, or depreciation for items over $300.
Occupancy expenses such as rent, mortgage interest, water and land rates, etc.
Expenses you can’t claim.
The cost of food, coffee, tea, milk, and other general household items you consume while working.
Costs related to children and their education, including setting them up for online learning, teaching them at home or buying equipment such as iPads and desks.
Time spent not working, such as your lunch break or time spent home schooling your children as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns.
The shortcut method.
To make it easier for people to claim deductions for working from home due to COVID-19, the ATO are accepting a temporary shortcut method for calculating home office expenses from 1 March 2020 to 30 June 2021. This allows you to claim a rate of 80 cents per hour for all additional running expenses.
Record-keeping.
Aside from a record of your expenses, The ATO may ask for a written account of the hours you have worked from home during the financial year, but are flexible on the mode. This could be a timesheet, roster, diary, or other log that shows how many hours you’ve worked. If you have staff who worked from home, you may need to work with them to help them accurately backdate the time they worked from home for their own tax returns.
